Pole Classes at FM Aerial & Movement ArtsHere at FM Aerial & Movement Arts, we have a variety of pole classes depending on your interests and goals. Whether you are completely new and haven't exercised in who-knows-how-long, or whether you've been training for years and are looking to expand into creatively sequencing skills, we want to see you succeed and have a great time. Our classes are open to all bodies, shapes, and abilities. If you are interested in taking a pole class just for funsies or looking to be a part of a community by taking consistent classes, we are excited that you are here! A common misconception is that you need to have some kind of upper body strength to start. We are here to say that the best time to start is now. A whole portion of beginner pole is learning how to dance and transition, which does not require as much strength as you may think until you wake up the next day sore in places you didn't know could be -sneaky strength building! Frequently Asked Questions |
|
Do I need upper body strength?
This is the #1 most common question we receive from students who are interested but are hesitant to start. NO! We like to think as pole as the gateway to getting back into movement and exercise. This is because it is sneaky exercise. You will have a good time and be so focused on trying the skills that you will not notice the muscle burn until the day or two after. hello muscles! Pole is the best place to start if you would like to try the other classes but want to build up some strength and body awareness first. We also offer an exotic floorwork class that is even more focused on legs and core, we will build strength up over time!
What do I wear?
For a typical pole class (Intro, Mixed Levels Beginners Welcome, Beginner Class) we teach class in bare feet or socks. For these classes we will also be teaching sits and climbs, which means that we need exposed legs, which means that we need you to wear shorts of some kind. The spandex kind are great (bike shorts that can be pulled up or the itty bitty volleyball shorts are perfect). Warmup layers in the winter are a must!
For sensual movement classes (pole choreo, chair +pole workshop, exotic floorwork) again, we recommend wearing shorts with a warmup layer over like sweatpants. Additionally, we *highly* recommend kneepads (we have some available at the studio for use free of charge), heels are optional but a great addition. We recommend Pleasers brand.
Where do I start?
Any class that says beginners welcome! We recommend starting with either the Pole Fitness: 4-Week Session, Exotic Floorwork classes, or the Beginner Pole Classes. The Chair + Pole Workshop is also catered towards new-to-pole people as well.
What is Pole Fitness: 4-Week Series?
This is a place for people who are completely new to pole, or beginners who want extra instruction, to learn pole fundamentals from the very beginning with other newbies in a small group environment. Class is structured to progressively build on each class as you learn more, gain strength and body awareness.
Are only womxn allowed to take class?
We welcome anyone who is interested in pole and dance. If you have a genuine interest in learning, we would love to have you in class. We welcome trans and non-binary folx who are interested in taking class and also male-presenting peeps.
What will a typical class look like?
If you are in a beginner-focused or sensual movement class (beginner pole, exotic floorwork, pole choreo, etc.) , typically the lights will be turned down. We have twinkle lights and black lights as the main lighting. For our mixed levels classes and intermediate classes, we may have the retna-burners on (overhead lights) especially if we plan on teaching skills with a higher risk of falls.
What is open pole?
Open pole is a time for you to practice what you have learned in class. It is for current students to use to practice skills they want to spend extra time on. It is not a time to learn new skills or to peruse instagram and try to self learn. Due to liability, we do not allow students who have not taken pole to sign up for open studio. An instructor will be present to ensure that students are practicing safely.
