Tip of the Month: Both Sides!

If you've been doing aerial arts for any length of time, you've probably discovered that you have a good side and a "dorky" side. It's important to remember to train both!

The reasons for this are many and varied, but two stories come to mind...

Once Sarah was flexing in the mirror, as one does 😆 and noticed that one of her biceps was visibly bigger than the other! Another time, Mallorie was training a new skill, and the next day she had a giant bruise under one knee and almost nothing under the other!

When learning new skills and practicing old ones, it's important to remember to train both sides! Lynnea used to say, it's even more important to drill your goofy side and was notorious for asking students to try both sides, and then do it one more time on your bad side!

But aside from lopsided biceps and bruise, training both sides is incredibly important for longevity. Training both sides helps to reduce the risk of injuring yourself. Training one side more can overwork the side that more frequently takes a load. It also keeps both sides of your body strong. Oftentimes, injury happens because one muscle group is not as strong as another. Training both sides in the air and cross training opposing muscles we can't as easily train in the air are huge keys needed to keep flying for years to come!

To all our aerialists out there, new and old, do your other side!
