Tip of The Month: Kortney on Performing

You don't need to be able to execute the most complex skills in order to perform. Some of the most engaging performances I have seen have been due to the stage presence of the performer. Make eye contact with people in the crowd, slow down and exaggerate your movements, hold that pose, think about what you are doing with your hands, and go all in on the vibe. Going for fun and playful? Smile, stick out your tongue, wink, or blow a kiss to the crowd. Go for cutesy poses, like smiling over your shoulder or broad, expansive movements. Looking to show your moody side? Express the pain, despair, or sadness on your face. Think of curling your body in on itself or "hugging" yourself, where able. And try practicing in the mirror at home, both for your facial expressions and how you want to move your arms and hands for when you're not holding onto your apparatus, of course.

We are also planning a series of showcase preparation workshops to help support both new and seasoned performers, youth and adults. The first workshop will be held on Thursday April 9th at 6:00pm. It will be led by Mallorie and Keanna and will focus on preliminary character and act creation, as well as breaking down how to prepare a piece for showcase. This workshop is highly encouraged for both youth and adults! (If you have a membership that includes open studios, then this workshop is also included in your membership.)
