Student Spotlight: Mallorie
Mallorie took an intro to aerial hoop 6-week series in January 2024 and has been with FM Aerial ever since. She has been in four student showcases and loves to bring a character and a story to life when she performs. In her first showcase she had insomnia, at the Mythology showcase she was a human sacrifice, at Frostglow she was a windup ballerina stuck in a snow globe, and in Fae Circus she was a sentient raven (not surprisingly, she was a theatre kid in high school!).
Mallorie started teaching lollipop classes in December 2025 and started teaching progressive aerial hoop classes this July. She came to teaching aerial with eight years experience teaching college level biology. I asked her about how teaching biology in a classroom/lab compares to teaching aerial in a studio.
A: They are similar in that you have to think about how to explain something in the simplest way possible before building on that to explain something more complex.
Q: What brought you to aerial?
A: My friend Sarah had an aerial silks performance at a winter showcase, and I saw others performing on aerial hoop. As soon as I saw someone doing a birdie roll, I knew I wanted to do hoop— it was exactly the sort of move I used to do on monkey bars as a kid!
Q: What is your favorite skill right now?
A: I love twizzly transitions like beauty rolls and their variations.
Q: Any fun facts about yourself outside of aerial that you'd like to share?
A: I am a biology professor! Lately I also love to do pen drawings of medieval snails attacking knights.
The snail thing is a real historical phenomenon, look it up if you don't believe us! See Mallorie's original artwork below.
